How to Care for Your Cutting Board

Proper care and maintenance of your cutting board can ensure many years of use. We recommend the following care instructions for maintaining your board:

Cutting Board Care Instructions:

After each use, wash with warm water and dish soap and pat dry with a dish towel
Place the cutting board on its edge to dry for 3-5 hours.

Coat with food-safe mineral oil or board butter once every month by following the below steps:

  • Wash with hot water and a sponge
  • Apply a light coat mineral oil using a clean rag on both sides and edges of the board.
  • Wipe off excess oil that does not absorb into the board.
  • If using board butter, apply to both sides and edges of the board, and work into the wood.  Allow board to sit for approximately 2 hours, or until the surface of the board is hazy.
  • Buff remaining board butter from the board. Store the board on edge to avoid warping, cracking or bowing.

Cutting Board Don'ts:

  • Never put in the dishwasher because the heat and water will warp and splinter the wood.
  • Do not allow board to soak in the sink or the dish pan as cracking, twisting, or bowing may occur.
  • Do not put hot utensils, tea pots or pans on the cutting board. Placing cooked meats on the board is okay.
  • Do not use olive or vegetable oils for maintenance as they turn rancid over time. Use only a food-grade mineral oil or food safe board butter to maintain your board.
